Filly chewing her tongue?

I went to look at a 3 year old POA filly today and I really like her but I'm curious about a habit she has. She sticks her tongue out sideways and chews on it. Her owner says she's done it ever since they got her as a weanling. She lives in a smallish pen with no other horses and she obviously is extremely bored. I walked her through the neighborhood a little bit and she was well behaved for the most part but understandably high strung. When I had her standing still while talking to her owner, the filly chewed her tongue and pawed.
Is this a result of boredom, pent up energy, or something else? Do you think I could make her stop?

That's called "Self-Soothing" It reminds them of suckling and relieves stress. Some racehorses do it as well.

Yearling
Yep that makes sense because her mom died when she was 3 months old so she went to another mare to suckle with that mare's foal. I got a pic of her doing it in the act :O

I think that's what Fairy does after she eats. Hm, I wonder why she is stressed out...

Our 2 year old does the same thing, she's done it as long as I can remember. She also was taken away from her mom early at 4 months
