Fun Winter Riding Ideas.

I live in New Zealand and we are now coming in to winter, motivation to ride is disappearing with the warmth.
I had to take 8 months off riding this year due to a knee reconstruction and have just got my boy back into light work and want to keep him going so I'm looking for ideas of fun schooling things I can use to keep him moving to get a good start on the summer season.
I was hoping some of you can help me .... I have access to jumps/poles, a large hacking area and a tape arena. Our area gets quite wet so actual jumping maybe out unless I can find a sand arena close by.

Hi Dazzy
I cant really offer many ideas but feel for you, I live in NZ too and have limited options for riding on my small property and no float. I do have the option to ride on my neighbours property which is larger but I dont like using their land unless I'm riding with her even though they have said it is fine. I would love to have an all weather arena but not enough space or money unfortunately!

No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing

Gridwork and ground poles are never wasted: perhaps set yourself some smaller goals (ie. that can be attained in less time spent outside lol) and really try and stick to them. Good opportunity to get your horse used - if he isn't already - to flappy jackets and scary rustling waterproofs. Once you get riding you warm up anyway, no?

Four horses, two people. 4000km in to the South American leg of our trip, and now in Brazil. Drop us a line on The Great Horse Trip

Hey IM another kiwi as well...

Winter - loads of stuff - lots of road riding - can you get to a beach - great time to go... love early morning rides...

Have you seen 101 jumping exercises - it has some cool pole activities if you can actually jump...

Cone work theres some cool activities you can do with cones - I use them in a circle and follow patterns (Look up steve brady patterns if you can find any online)

have you thought about clicker training - I did that with one of my horses over winter once for something different... Im quite luck as we have woodhill sands locally and loads of arenas so can ride all the way through winter - only inhbited through daylight
