Getting a horse into shape for eventing

I'm not sure whether this sort of question belongs in the eventing thread or the horse training one, so I just put it in this one. I'm about to buy a 12 year old Hanoverian gelding who hasn't been in work for 1 1/2 years. I'm hoping to do eventing with him, so does anyone has any tips about getting a horse back into shape after a long break? And how long would it take for both of us to get into condition for an event?

What kind of event? Ride him 3x a week and he could easily do a schooling show to get his feet wet. If it were me, I'd stay at BN schooling shows this year and go from there.
