I purchased a 2006 ottb mare in 2013 (not straight off the track) named finleigh, and she is a very forward ride, so you have to ride with your body, you can't ride only with your hands or she will keep getting faster or faster. She absolutely loves to jump, jumping and running are the two things she loves most lol. She is an awesome girl, as long as she knows what you are asking of her she puts 110% into it, and she is very brave and bold. She is, however, quite stiff to the left (which is weird because thoroughbreds are raced to the left), and sometimes has a harder time relaxing and calming down. I am hoping to event her, so I was wondering if anybody had any advice for us or exercises we could work on that will improve our dressage? She also has a tendency to fall in, and she is still learning to bend around my leg (it is much harder for her to the left). I try opening up my inside rein but she takes this as an opportunity to fall in or cut her corners. When that happens, I apply my inside leg until she moves over, but I am not happy with the amount of leg it takes to actually get her over. What can I do to get her to respect my leg more? Would using gentle spurs as a reminder help? I don't mean use them all of the time... I mean having them on but only applying them when she doesn't make an effort to move off of my leg. Would that help? Or does anybody have any other ideas of exercises we could try?
I would love to hear what anybody has to say and am really looking for ideas and/or advice! Thanks!
