When I was announcing and had a great view of the lineup, there was one error that often flunked the handler. Once the horse is standing square, a good number of the horses stood in an arc, toward the handler. This cost them as the horse should be straight from poll to tail. You need to practice this as it is too easy for a horse to drift inward with it's head. Have someone behind you and high enough to help you achieve this.
