When I bought Kenzie she was ridden in saddle that was pinching her shoulders badly and she had some very nasty ulcers. She developed the habit of biting when her girth was tightened.
Ulcers have been treated, her back was checked and its fine, the saddle fits her, yet she is still biting when I tighten the girth.
I'm riding her english right now, so I've been doing up the girth one hole at a time, walking her around, then doing it up another hole. This has always worked with girthy horses before but I'm not seeing much change in her. After 4 months I'm still getting nipped at.
I put my elbow up so if she actually tries to bit she slams her face into my elbow, but she normally doesn't go for an actual bite. She prefers Pissy mare face and nipping.
What else can I try?
