Obstacles. Put out obstacles in the arena. Anything you can around the barn. We have a mattress, cones, poles, frogs that make noise when you go past them, tarps, hay bale with a cow's head, mailbox, pvc 'cave' with 'finger's that the horse goes through and the fingers which are made out of a foam material touch the horses side (interestingly this is the obstacle that freaks horses out way more than walking over the mattress).

It keeps the horse engaged and its something to keep the boredom away. Just make sure whatever you use won't injure the horse if they step over/on/around it (things that stick out with rough/sharp edges).

I like making up patterns too. Not just circles and serpentines. And then do pauses where he has to do forehand/haunch turns or side passes etc. I hate just circles and circles and circles!!!

I do cavaletties and poles. My neighbor put lots of poles (10 may be?) straight and then a curve on one side of the arena, and I put couple cavaletties on other side, so we trot over both sets trying to keep horse rhythmical and steady (which is not always a case I must add). It's certainly very challenging.

Ride with your eyes closed (for short distances, or on a lounge or in a round pen)
Have student sing a song to help them stay relaxed while riding without stirrups or on loung without reins
Have student call out foot fall (right. Left right . ..) see how accurate they can be.
Practice stopping on a dime.
Ride a buck ( a dollar bill under the thigh of a bareback or stirrupless rider)
Dropping and picking up stirrups during trot

Riding circles or squares using outside rein only. It makes darn sure you're using your legs and seat properly.

One stirrup work. Works for western and english riding and REALLY gives you a secure seat. Very easy to ride with stirrups or even without stirrups but test your true balance by dropping just one. My old trainer gave me many lesson's like this and I dreaded it every time because it was hard work but now I'm VERY thankful that she did because it has come in handy many times where going over a jump I would lose a stirrup, or I canter and lose one of my stirrups. And every time it is no big deal because I know how to ride without it. Anytime someone asks for suggestions I give them this one. It really does come in handy at times.

I think I am going to try that! What a great idea! I know that I always feel that I will panic if I loose a stirrup.
