Herd Sour?

My friend is having issues with her horse being herd sour: I'll post the conversation. Editing out her name for privacy.

Friend says (11:45 PM): CJ is a good trail horse, well... he use to be.
Friend says (11:45 PM): he isn't really good at anything anymore :/
.:Ne0n Zero:. Says (11:45 PM): D:
Friend says (11:46 PM): CJ is herd sour now, and he doesn't go out alone on the dirt roads anymore.
.:Ne0n Zero:. Says (11:46 PM): D:
.:Ne0n Zero:. Says (11:46 PM): what do you do when you see him do you just go out ride and leave?
.:Ne0n Zero:. Says (11:46 PM): or do you hang with him
Friend says (11:46 PM): both.
Friend says (11:47 PM): sometimes I just groom him, sometimes I don't even catch him, and sometimes we ride in the arena or work in the round pen.
Friend says (11:47 PM): yeah, ever since we moved back to this barn, he became very herd sour.
.:Ne0n Zero:. Says (11:47 PM): D: hm
Friend says (11:48 PM): yeah, it sucks.
Friend says (11:48 PM): plus, I don't shoe him anymore, so going down dirt roads = ouchie for him.

My advice for her would be to put him to work around his buddies. Trot in circles lope around, make it unpleasant for him then take him away from them and let him rest. Just continue that until he is relaxed with being away from them.

Do you know how long the shoes have been off? Its a possiblity he could be a little tender footed.

See my reply to 'i need a bit of advice' thread. Also make sure the horse is booted or otherwise comfortable when going on roads/rough tracks.
