Some horses just need the time to figure out what will be the best way for them to get out of the trailer. When backing my mare takes her time, Granted, not 5 minutes, but she doesn't just back right out. And our filly likes to checkout the ground before taking her flying leap. I'd just let her figure out what works for her.

She is a very observant horse. She is around 16hh and only a 6'5 trailer it gets a little difficult. I know once a friend who has a 16.3hh TB Cross had brought him to the vet and he accidentaly stepped on the lead coming out and he threw his head up, hit on her also 6'5 trailer and he ended up knocking himself out. We also don't have bumper guards on our trailer. I know my show horse last year we would back out of the trailer because she refused to turn around, and she would feel for the edge. She would tap the floor with her foot. But Sassy has no thought of taping or feeling the floor when she backs out. She wants to see where she is going. Plus, if she rides facing forwards she will just dance the entire time. Rides backwards, she falls asleep.
