my old man 18, we were hanging out by feed door he was dozing and I was just hanging my head relaxing with him. He made a couple of funny mouth noises and bumped my head with his lower lip. I looked up and he had backed up a foot or so and was coming at me with wide open mouth and ears back . I shouted Quit, then he stopped and hung there while I loudly berated him. He never did this before.

90 degree temp cooler with big fans on them in stalls during day. he eats 3 times a day and had recently had lunch.

Was I interferring with his nap space? I am shocked and the biting face was serious but he backed down with my aggressive stance and shout.

I think he needs time out. tie up. no treats. disrespectful behaviour gets a flick of lead rope keep him turning in his stall till he stops and turns to me. Sounds spoiled because hubs barely interacted with him I had 4 surgeries since october knee replaced and shoulder replaced, so beside minimum care blanket, feed, hay water no lead rope into stall, i am back with fly spray and etc. are they that smart to be like a shark? i will watch now and have my draft horse stick close by.

Maybe he got spooked by something and the fight instinct came into play.
I wouldn't think too much of it but if it continues maybe get a vet out to check for pain? I'm just about always in pain with my disability but when it's bad, I get moody, angry and depressed.

Chances are he just freaked about suddenly seeing something in front of him.

My mare did that to me once. A little different scenario though. I surprised her when I walked up to her stall while she was eating. She thought I was another horse and she came at me. If I didn't duck, she would have got me right in the face (I heard her teeth clack right next to my head). As soon as she realized it was me, she ran to the back of her stall and parked out. Parking out is her default when she knows she did something she will get in trouble for, LOL.

I guess my point is, maybe something surprised him and he thought he saw something that wasn't really happening. Or maybe he was being grumpy for some reason and needed a good reprimand for it.
