Horse launches from gate

Im a worker at a boarding facility that holds 27 horses. Many x race horse thoroughbreds that love to bust out of the pasture gates when I am leading them out and into their stall for their food. This really needs to stop for it is not only very rude, but my shoulder is going to be very hurt one day! I can not simply make them re peat the walking out action for the pastures are full of many horses that would escape if I linger around with the gate open. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what your situation is like, but I would first drive all of the other horses away then make the horse I'm working with stand on lead and when I open the gate, if they overstepped me, I'd back them up and make them stand. When I open the gate all the way, then I'd let them walk out peacefully. And make them stand while I close the gate closed again.

I could try that. It may be hard to keep all other horses back sense they all know dinner is waiting and that they all go in, they tend to crowed the gate. Either way, thanks for the response, I wil give it a go.

That is why I'm advised to carry a crop. I don't, I use my lead rope or my body language, but then again I only deal with a small herd of 8. You have to be consistent though. They'll start crowding you less once you drive them off more often.

Ill stick to the body language rout- If the owners see me using a crop on thier darling horses they may complain to my boss. All though Im sure most of the horses are use to them...
