Horse leads well at home, but has no respect in new places
I've had my horse about two months now and while we have made a lot of progress on ground work and she is very respectful in 98% of situations, she is also very easily distracted when she's in a new place.
If we are at home she leads like a dream. If she's in a new situation she has her head in the clouds and pays no attention to me whatsoever. I can make her halt and she will, but she will also forge ahead of me and at times has even bumped me with her shoulder because she's just not watching where she's going. She's too busy looking at everything.
The times she has bumped me I've smacked her with the lead rope and made her halt. I hope I won't get flack for hitting her, but I didn't know what else to do at the moment and I just went on reflex.
When she forges I will make her back up a step or two, which can sometimes go well and other times be a struggle. (she will do it perfectly fine when she's relaxed)
I'd really love any suggestions on how to get her attention and make her less "all over the place" when she's in a new situation.
