I am not totally clued up on this topic myself, but I do agree with what the others have said. If you're going to "teach tricks" make it useful and safe ones.

I agree that (some) horses will do the trick without being asked, in the hope of getting a reward.

Ahh, as I went back to read my posts I seen they didn't necessary make sense together. What I mean is... If properly trained, the horse should NOT do the trick until asked, but that is not always going to be the case. You will get the few horses who just do the trick at any time, expecting a reward, but if trained correctly the likelihood will be a ton less.

Well I tought my first horse how to bow and he loved it! Id put a treat inside his leg and make himn reach...also how to rear... it was pretty good he only did on command. I tought my QH how to rear he did it well the first week... then the next he kept doing it higher adn higher without command and its pretty scary when he's 16hh and pure muscle. He goes up like trigger, and I end up sliding off his back.. so I wouldnt recomend rearing because I now have to un teach him...

Be careful teach them something you don't mind him doing.
