Horse Will Not Trot Under Saddle

I have a now 9 year old mare that just will not maintain a trot under saddle.I bought her as an 8 year old, unbroke, that had not had much of anything done with her…her feet were trimmed and she was vaccinated regularly.Thank goodness for that at least I guess!I have spent numerous hours on the ground with this horse. She will walk, trot, canter by voice or hand motions either on a lunge line or without (with or without saddle). She will maintain a trot bareback with me riding with no issues. She will trot in hand, under saddle, till I just can’t run any more.Add a rider and she starts to trot and about 2 seconds into it will start to walk.Tap her side or tell her to trot and she will pick it right back up but then 2 seconds later stops. There’s no bucking maybe a head toss though.

We’ve had her saddle checked for fit.Teeth checked.Vet checked for pain issues and had a chiropractor out. I don’t ride with a bit much but do on occasion.I’m thinking it’s just cause she’s new to it and perhaps a bit of laziness and/or stubbornness.I feel like we have just ran into a wall are progress has halted. It’s been about a month of working on this. I don’t expect perfection but I would like to see longer than a couple of seconds.

Suggestions/ideas welcome on how to get us moving along!

My first thought was that it might be a strength or balance issue. But you say that she trots well with a rider riding bareback. This leaves me with two ideas.

One is that it is a saddle fit issue despite the fact that you had the fit checked. Did you have the fit checked with a rider in the saddle? Was the saddle examined for a broken tree?

Another possibility is that the saddle does not allow the rider to sit properly. Some horses are more forgiving of this than others.

You might also see what this horse does with a rider using a different saddle so you have one other factor for comparison.

She trots beautifully bareback.

We did not check the saddle with a rider in it, so I will try that. Saddles were checked over and they are good.

I did try a couple of other saddles and she does it in those as well but you may be on to something. I will experiment with this.

Thanks!

It sounds like you have tested every possible option, and the changing factor is the addition of the saddle. Even though you have had it fitted, maybe get a second fitters opinion. Something about the weight distribution could be pressing in some off spots for her.
