Horse won't load

After having my horse for 2 months I have been slowly noticing some vices he has but they really aren't a big deal ( but previous owner was very untruthful). Anyway on Easter Sunday my husband went to load up our 2 horses and only came home with his. This horse that loaded so well when we bought him is now refusing to get in the trailer! We have tried being patient, putting another horse in first, tying the lead on to the side when he puts his front feet in the tapping his butt, then smacking his butt nothing works it only results in rope burns and him cutting up his front legs! I need some suggestions on things to try with him. My husband is so mad he wants to sell him but I then pointed out who wants to buy a horse that won't load! Honestly I would love to keep this horse he is great in most ways ( a few minor vices but nothing serious) I picked him out, I bought him but this loading thing is unreal. We bought them for riding in the mountains and that isn't gonna happen at this rate. He used to be a show horse so he's been trailered lots.

Odds are that the horse has you and your husband sussed and knows he is winning when he does not go in the trailer. If he loaded well when you collected him from the vendor then it must be down to you!

Might be the trailer. I feel your frustration but loading isn't something you want to rush and get angry. Got a lunge line, little shorter one? When he refuses to load, work him. Keep repeating it until he loads. One thing, try to stay calm and allow yourself the entire day, clear your schedule.

Like ^ said, it could be the trailer. My horses will load without a lead, just point them and they step right in, if it is a slant stock trailer or large size commercial trailer...if it is one of those low ceiling two horse trailers - no, they won't go in. I kind of don't blame them and I won't force them too either. They load just fine.

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.
