Horse won't slow down unless in the lead

I have a five year old that I bought 5 months ago. If we are in the lead
of the other horses we ride with, he is a perfect horse. Very relaxed and will canter very slowm, totally under control. The minute we drop back behind the lead horse, he is very hard to control. He wants to run right on the front horse's tail and actually slobbers on their tail. I cannot hold him back except to really pull on the reins. In every other way he is the perfect mannered horse. I ride him in a twisted broken wonderbit, which is what he was ridden in when I bought him. I know that he is just young and is probably not used to be ridden on trails and with other horses. I am hoping with more experience he will get better, but I hate to tell other people we have to take the lead every time. Any ideas?

When he wants to rush up to the front, make him work. Trot circles (not the slow jog but with umph) around the lead horse, make him sweat. Take him to the back of the pack and let him walk. If he wants to get back to the front, trot him to the front and repeat working him at the front. The idea is to get him to realize that being first is where the work happens and the back is where he gets to rest!

Start riding with just one other person. Alternate who leads and follows.

This is a case of loads of wet saddle blankets.

Even though my 26 year old gelding still prefers to lead, he will settle in line if the line is not putzing. Makes him an awesome horse to pony off of though. Won't let the youngster ahead!
