How to build up muscle?

I wasn't so sure what to put this under but I finally got the 20 year old arabian! He has been a total doll but I don't know what exercises to do to build up his muscles again. I have been lunging him at a walk, trot for the last couple of days but he seems to be getting annoyed.

Any suggestions on how to get this boy to build up his muscle? He also bucks at a canter when I ride him but he is balanced.

Generally, when a horse needs tone, I ride them if there is not medical reason not to. Increasing the amount of work in relation to their improved strength.

You mention this one "bucks" when he canters when you are riding him. Any idea why?

I spoke to the original owner of him and she said that he turns into a rocking horse when he's not ridden in awhile. It's been 4 years since he's been untouched. But he is starting to clear out a bit.

What I usually do is go on harder trails with small x-country jumps. Going up hills is great for their back, leg muscles.
