Doesn anyone know how to get a western horse to ride english? I am able to do this on young horses, but this horse is 16. I just bought him and he is a solid western ranch horse from Montana, branded and all, and he was riddden once every few months. I am not very experienced in western, but I am very experienced in English. That is why I think I would be able to get him to be ridden more. He is a 16hh and very gentle and muscular! He shouldn't be wasting time in the pasture! Please, any help on this is accepted!
Sorry I ride western but I think he should be fairly easy to go from western to english. I think it would be tougher to go from english to western :?
He is probably used to neck reining so direct reining should be easy for him to pick up on, and the leg cues aren't that different as far as I know. You may have to say "whoa" instead of "halt" for a stop
Yes, I don't see it being a problem. Even horses that neck rein are taught to direct rein first: he may not have done it in awhile, but I'm sure he'll remember it quickly. I assume he won't be as used to riding with steady contact though; I bet you'll have to move him into that more slowly.
I think what I might do is put on an english saddle and lunge him first. Then I will use his western bridle and maybe after a few days I will start riding. My horse has a western bridle that is one of those bits (i forget the name at the monent!) that is very small & thin. But he responds so well to any cue that he has cantered from a halt with a 10 year old on his back! Thanks for all of your help with this!
