How to separate mom and 1 yr old baby.

The horses we ride belong to a friend. The pony has a baby who is nearing a year old. We would love to separate them for riding and training, but if I lock up the baby, she literally breaks through the fences to come see her mom. She is also still nursing some. How can we teach baby to chill out alone so we can ride without her galloping all around us. My five year old rides her mom and it's not safe to have baby loose with her riding mom at the same time. Should I find someone to board her for a month or so to teach them to be separate and wean her? I would love to ride with my daughter on then two adult horses without baby making a stink.

The way I see it, you have 2 options. You can either find a place to move the baby or mother where they cannot see or hear each other or you can just get some fencing that the baby cannot break through. Wire is never appropriate for trying to separate a foal and mother because it just isn't strong or solid enough to keep them apart and it is unsafe for them to run through. I would suggest getting some pipe panels and making a pen to keep the baby in for a while.

Weanling
Might not sound very nice but imo this would be a good opportunity to teach the baby how to stand quietly tied.

I would avoid pipe panels, they can cause a spectacular wreck if a horse decides they are going to go through and in this case I think that would happen. You need a solid wall like a stall, something they can't bust through or stick legs through. If you don't have a good stout stall then I would take the baby to a place that does for a while.
