My friend and I was sadeling the horses the other day for a quick ride in the pasture and I leaned down to check that her new girth was centerd undeneeth when. ZAP! The hose bit me on the back. It didn't bleed but it did give me a good bruse.
I know horses can be tuch about there girth area but he has never ben.
My instant reaction was the worst thing I could have done looking back. I rubed him up by the head to show I wasnt trying to hurt him. I can't believe I done that. Im new to horses and that is my only excuse.
Hide sight, I should have Wacked him a good one. What I done was show him it is exceptable to bite me. If it ever hapens again it will end differantly.
I think the reason he did it was becouse the day before I started him on lunging. Driving him around and around puts me in a domanent roll. I think he was trying to test that. and I showed him I cant back it up. I hope it doesnt make everything hadrer from here on out. I will find out. today im going to lung again and if he give me any problems at all Ill have to set it straight real quick.

Any advise or coments?

You have to show every horse you work with who is boss. Once they understand who is boss things go smoother, but yes, you goofed, but its not to late next time bad action=slap , good action = lots of praise. Unless your horse is extremely stubborn he should understand soon enough :)
Good luck, Hope I helped,

Do you know this horse well? Could it be "cinchy" or in pain due to the saddle? If this could be the case, perhaps you could have it ruled out by a vet?

If not, then what the others said. Good luck! =)

Depending on the horse, I don't think he's going to be all that much more difficult to work with. Just be aware that he might play games and be ready for it. As you said before, he's trying to test your dominance. Horses are very physical. For a long time they're going to test you each and every day-nothing personal, it's just that their life hangs in the balance of having a strong, level-headed leader who isn't going to let them get eaten by a pack of wolves. The biggest thing is just reprimand immediately, then let it go. Don't get angry about it, because then it shows the horse you're not exactly level-headed. Have fun =)

I'm so glad you realized that what you did was the total opposite of what you should have done, so I'm not going to criticize you at all. Very few people don't admitt when they have done something wrong, but you did...so great for you! And yes, next time he goes to bite, give him a punch, not a little flick, but a good punch.

My horse is the same way. She even does it when I mount bareback with a mounting block. She sticks her head way out and bites at the air. One time when someone else was tightening her girth, they didn't tell me and I was talking to another person, she bit me on the arm pretty good and without any hesitation at all, I punched her right on the side of her face. Sounds pretty rough, but hey...it hurt like hell so I'm going to make her feel the wrath of the ol' fist lol. I didn't hit her with all I have, but pretty damn hard.
