I sent my horse to the trainer

I have had my horse for one year this month. When I got him I started saving my dollars for some training time on him. We have made such good progress in the last year that I was not really sure if I wanted to send him or not after all. But I had my little savings envelope so off he went. I figured it is a good time of year to take a break from riding too.
He was there for three days and I went and had a lesson on him. Already I felt a difference in his responsiveness and calmness. Not kidding! It must have been all that good preparation I have been doing, right :)
I wish the trainers were not so far away because I can see I need to commit to the lessons with him. I need to learn almost more than he needs to learn, I think. When to be firm and when to release, to relax my legs,
ride straight, etc. etc. I thought I was doing okay but they gave me lots to work on in one lesson. It is so much fun to feel progress with your horse that I had to write this post!

The time you spend with the trainer will be well spent. There is no standing still in horsemanship you either advance or you backslide. Keep advancing and good luck.

Hi there Juniper...
This is a tough choice isn't it???
I recently had to deal with sending my girl out for training.

I have to say I am totally pleased with everything thus far. My mare, Candi, is a little over an hour away, but I have managed to see her 3 times in the last 30 days.

You will be so excited when your horse returns! I totally understand about things to learn or re-learn in order to help for when your horse comes back to you. What I have done it take as many lessons (not on my horse) as I possibly can until her return. So far it has really really paid off.

I am wishing you all the best on your journey!!!
:)

Thanks, I am taking a lesson after work tomorrow on a lesson horse at a barn near by. I really don't have the time or extra money right now but I agree the better I get the more successful this whole enterprise will be. My horse is an hour and a half away. So to go see him takes most of the day!
How old is Candi? What kind of riding do you do? How long do you plan to have her at the trainers?

Yikes, are you alright? Where were you when that happened? How old is your horse? I would love to hear about his progress in training!

My horse has been with a trainer since April 2009. She is doing pretty good. At her old trainers she was an hour away and I went to see her once a month.

Over the holidays, after a...falling out with my old trainer I found a new fantastic trainer. She is doing much much better with the new trainer and she is only 10 mins away so I've gone to see her 4 times since she went there on Jan 1st. But that will slow down a bit and I will probably make Sundays my day to go see her.

Your horse must be young to be at the trainer's for so long. That was probably not fun having a falling out with the trainer. Hope your new one fits the bill.

If your horse completely changes when he/she gets back from the trainer might want to lounge him/her.
I sent my horse off to training 2 years ago for 30 days. And he was great at the trainers. But,when he came back to my barn he continued to have the same behavior like he was never trained at all.
