Ideas on exercise program

Okay, so my guy is pretty out of shape because of it being winter and all. He's not fat, just needs to build up muscle, especially in his hinquarters. I need to get him in shape, especially if I am going to be going to study with Karen Rohlf. However I don't have an arena so obviously this makes working him harder. I want to work him on hills and do my 6 week hill therapy program, but right now the weather suuuucks and the ground is muddy, so that's out of the question at least for now.

I know what I want to do with him on the ground, but while riding I guess I need ideas on an exercise program. Like how many minutes of trotting and cantering especially. I have a couple ideas on exercises to do with him, but I definitely need to get his endurance up! And how long to keep it up, when to change it, etc. With my other horse, who I lost on V-day, I never really focused on this much because he kept himself in pretty good shape and all I did with him was trail ride, but I want to jump and do dressage with my warmblood so he needs to be in tip-top shape. This is one area where I want to gain more experience in...exercising for performance. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

for riding an out of shape horse I like to do mostly walking, but not a leisure trail ride walk, i want a marching, working walk out of my horse, (You could also start asking for collection as well)
I will start with about 5 min trot in each direction and will slowly increase it.

I do remember reading something in a magazine on a exercise schedule for an out of shape horse. I'll have to find it.
