I'm getting a new horse!!

Well, my partner of 7 years is now in semi-retirement. :( Rango's 21 this year and is now going blind in both eyes so it's time for him to pass the torch onto a new horse. Rango has taught me SO MUCH in these 7 years so he has earned his new semi-retirement lifestyle. He's still my #1 guy though. Always will be.

Anyway, I've found my next (horse) teacher! He's an 8 year old Hanoverian and his gaits are GORGEOUS! He's chestnut with 2 white socks and a white star on his forehead. 16.1-16.2 hh. He's had some dressage and eventing training, although he was abused with whips at the training barn I've been told he has LOADS of potential but they need to get rid of him because he's biting people. No one can really do anything with him except a vet who rides him (she's known him all of his life) and a college student who works with him on the ground doing a little Parelli. He has a bully streak in him b/c he was VERY spoiled as a foal and if he knows he can intimidate you, he will. But a lot of his behavior is also defensive b/c he's had a lot of bad handling as well.

The girl who works with him describes him as VERY playful, curious, fun, very smart and a real sweet heart. An example of how smart he is, is this hilarious story she told me about him. The farrier had just put front shoes on him (after being barefoot for a long time) and he proceeded to go out into his pasture and intentionally rip the shoes off They were watching him do it so that's how they knew it was intentional lol. He's sound to jump as well.

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!! We leave next Friday to go pick him up! I plan to do jumping and dressage with him after putting a good foundation on him going through the Parelli program. I have an opportunity in the future to go study with Karen Rohlf at her place in Florida, so I would be taking the new guy with me!!

I will post pics as soon as I have some! He's gorgeous, although he's a little fat right now lol.

YAY!!!!

That is so exciting. He sounds like he will be great after you work through some issues with him. I am sure you will be able to.

I have a guy who is very similar to your new guy. Ak_showgirl (new member) has been his person for the last three years, and they LOVE each other. He is really a one person sort of guy...it takes time to earn his trust and respect. I feel I would never be able to sell him, because no one else would understand how to approach/handle him - and he is in his niche now! I just hope his girl has time for him when she goes to college. :) He is a pleasure to be around - if he knows, respects, and trusts you. What you described with your new guy sounds just like him. :)

Thanks! I'm not concerned about his behavior at all. The girl who works with him doing a little Parelli said that he has never tried to bite her or anything like that.

All the people I've talked to about him all say that he is definitely a one person kind of horse. He was suppossed to be in a dressage lesson program but with all those different people handling him he has not adjusted well. I know he will teach me a lot!

Congrats on your new horse! I'm sure after the initial getting to know each other period, you'll have an amazing bond. :)

I will definitely keep you all posted! And will post pics as soon as I can!

I know this horse will teach me a lot. I'm really looking forward to working with him (and especially getting that belly off him lol) and seeing what his TRUE nature is, not what some unknowledgable people labeled him as. Poor guy as such a bad rap where he is now, but after next weekend it won't matter!
