I own a 7 y/o (well... she turns 8 this sunday aha) OTTB and we have been having trouble with our right lead for quite some time now. As some of you may know, it's extremely difficult to convince an OTTB that they CAN canter on their right lead

We have been working on it all week and she was gradually getting better. Last sunday it took her three times to get it. Yesterday we got it several times and she picked it up every time I asked for it! And it was pretty and clean (not a fast trot with me obnoxiously cranking on her to pick it up). All I had to do was sit and ask for the cue and off we went! It may sound like no big deal to some of you, but it was a HUGE step forward for us. Now all we need to do is work on getting her to relax and carry herself (which she's getting better with) and i'll pretty much have all the "basic" flatwork down.

CONGRATS! Lead changes can be very hard to teach most horses especially an OTTB! Good for you!

Congrats! It's such a good feeling when you accomplish something that's been hard to do!

Keep up the great work!
Happy Earlier Birthday to your horse!

Yupp! I've had her since July. We've been working on it, but not seriously until these past few weeks. It was not fun! But now it's way worth it. Haha
