Today was the latest (and biggest) step forward in my boy Phoenix's training. When I bought him he wasn't broken to saddle and had never had anyone on his back. A few weeks ago I brought him up and worked with him, eventually culminating in saddling him up. I worked him a little bit with the saddle on and then untacked and put him away. Then I got hectic busy, so haven't had a lot of time since then.

Today was the big day. I brought him up to the roundyard, did some groundwork, worked on yields, got him used to me standing on the mounting block beside him, tacked him up, leant in the stirrups to see how he would react...and then...the big moment came, my mum came in and step by step (foot in stirrup, bounce, belly over, etc etc) she got to mount him. We walked around a bit. He was a little rushy at first, understandably of course. Mum was on him for about 15 minutes all up and by the end he was definitely starting to loosen up. So just thought I would share a photo of the first time anyone has ever been on Phoenix's back

I think that's wonderful! Good for you :). He looks real calm. Just asking, Im curious: Why did your mom get on him, and not you?

Great job with him, he's a beautiful horse, and I love his name!!!

I've got really, shockingly bad ankles which make it impossible for me to mount from the ground or a mounting block at the moment. I have to line my horse up next to a trailer and just swing my leg over :( Didn't think the poor boy would take to well to that, not too mention if he did go spare we would be out in the open! Haha.

He took it really well actually, he was definitely nervous about her being up there, but still was thinking enough to listen to our reassurance.
