lateral work and bending

How do I start to teach my horse lateral work, and bending around my leg?
I would think starting with sidepassing would be best for getting her sideways, but I don't know for sure, and as to bending around my leg I have no idea where to start.
If you all could help me I would really appreciate it (:

Actually a leg yield to the rail is the easiest place to start. Your horse should be bent slightly to the inside.. open your outside rain and push your horse to the rail with your inside leg. Only do one step or two at a time.. start very smart and give big rewards.

I would actually start with turns on the forehand. That helps to get the horse thinking about moving away from your leg. Then you can do a cool exercise where the turn on the forehand merges into a leg yield.

Beginning lateral work, yes.

Please let me know if you'd like me to elaborate more/explain better. ;)

I'd start on the ground and teach her how to move her butt, her shoulders, and her whole body from the ground. It helps if you give them a "wall," either a real wall or your body in front of her, and praise for every lateral step.

Starline, I tried this and all she would do is start to turn, is this normal? Do I just push her into it until she gets a couple of steps then praise her?

Islandwave, I started with the turns on the forehand, and she seems to be picking it up a little bit (: once she gets this down I'll start with her haunches, i'll let you know how it goes!!
