Hi everyone, (this is gonna be long sorry in advance)
I have a 13hh pony who's 11, whom I am hoping to get some help on reschooling him to get more forward and listening to my leg.
The arena we ride in, is basically the height of a dressage arena (just set up in the paddock, not a proper setup. (which he tries to run out of.)
I've had enough of just 'plodding' around with him (nearly 2 years I've owned him), and I really want to take our rides further.
I know pretty much everything explained will be my fault.
The ride we had last was terrible. He wasn't listening to my leg aids, running out of the arena, bolting to the yards if he got a chance, throwing little pig roots here and there.. He is ok when there is another horse in the arena, and just wants to follow them.. But as soon as I try to change direction, it all starts again.
I've got to be completely honest here;
Because I was so frustrated with him, instead of stopping. Thinking through and redirecting him and fixing THAT problem, I just took him into the round yard and started lunging him (which I never do).. I hoped back on, didn't work. He was still stubborn, didn't want to move...
I untacked him and hoped on him bareback (which hes great with that)
But nope, still no difference. I just got more and more angry with him.
We untacked and that was it. I had enough of it for one day.
Thinking through it now, what i did was completely and utter stupid. Poor guy probably hated me so much that day.
riding again tomorrow.. I really don't want the same thing to happen. all this week I have been trying to educate myself more in using more leg aids etc..
So - my questions are..
What excercises can I do to get him more lighter and forward?
what am *I* doing wrong?
Please, any tips would be really helpful, I just want to Have more fun in our rides. He's a great little guy. Super bombproof,
Great to ride out on the road.. But it's just as soon as we start working in the arena, it all starts if it's not his way. (Incase any one is wondering I am 14)
Thank you
Chloe
