Long Line Advise Needed!

I’ve been training my 3yo in ground work for some time. And I have her broke and we walk and trot under saddle but I feel like she needs some more work with me on the ground. I really want to long line her and we’ve done it once, she’s very willing and it went well but I don’t feel completely comfortable with it myself. So I don’t want to put her into any bad habits when I’m at fault for just simply not knowing what I’m doing with one.
Help?

I have been trying to learn this as well. I would just try to get the hang of it at the walk before progressing to trot and canter. This way everything comes up much slower and you can get your bearings.

Just to clarify long lining do you mean lunging where you stand in the same spot and the horse is on a long line and you send it out onto a circle or do you mean where you have two long lines from the bit and work either behind them or to the side with one line around the horses back end if this makes sense? Wasn't sure what you called it over the pond haha

^ I believe she meant using 2 lines. Using a single line is called lunging, and using double lines like reins is called long lining.

An excellent reading resourse for you is by a fellow country woman of your's. The author is Jennie Loriston-Clarke and from I've heard from a good friend of mine who is Brit and lives in London is a respected horsewoman in her own right. The title of Loriston-Clarke's book is: "Lunging and Long-Reining". Long Lining and Long-Reining are the same thing. The book has many, many picturals that show precisely what to do and what to expect. I have long lined(reined) many times and it is a wonderful training tool. Another excellent resource is Frenchman Dominique Barbier and his wife, Debbie. I have the Barbiers' VHS video on lunging and long-reining. Which is another excellent training venue for horsepeople.

Well the way we do it is using a surcingle and attaching the two lines to the bit and running them thru the surcingle so the contact is the same as if a rider was on her back. But also to practice moving forward by themselves, we stand behind (at a further distance) and give them the driving commands Gee and Haw. It’s good to get them thinking about what we are asking without being able to see us. Just as if we were on their back.

I thought that was called ground driving? Anyway, I say try it! The only way your going to learn is to practice.
