Lunging with side reins...

I actually put it in Tack, but I think this is more appropriate section.

So what is it used for? Does it teach horse to collect?

Correct riding teaches the horse to collect. It is very difficult to teach collection from the ground because it is the rider's circle of aids that teaches collection, not any gadget.

I use side reins while lunging to teach the horse to accept contact and learn how to move over their back and stretch into contact without the interference of a rider. It's also really nice to have a horse used to contact before you go hopping on them for the first time.

Thanks, anebel! My instructor suggested to use it to teach my horse softening at the pole and going on bit (only under her supervision), so I was wondering how useful it is.
