Unhappy Moody Gelding! Help!

My pony is very well mannered. He has only bitten once (and was very very told off and disgraced. He never threatens or goes into space. But he always pins his ears! He doesn't lunge forward as if to bite you. But its almost like we have no bond :( I would love to do join up but we don't have a round pen and our school has a jut out where the gate goes and if you try to do it anyway they just go to the gate!! Any things I can do to get him to look forward to seeing me?! Thanks

Nothing more than a person would want. Horses and people like to be around "others" that they know and trust. Sort of like a horses may not want to see a saddle coming, but they prefer to see a rider that they know will not be "moody" in the saddle - carrying the saddle. :)

He's just trying to get out of work. Pinning his ears may have intimidated others to stay away so he's trying it with you. Take him into the paddock and when his ears go back make him move his butt with a tap. Hold him about 30" from the halter so he can circle you. If you are consistent he will learn that ear pinning results in work and that you are the boss that makes him move his feet.

Yup. Make him move his feet. And change direction, back up. And have it in your head that you MEAN IT. Don't ask him - act like a dominate horse would. Try and visualize that you are another horse and you run his life like no tomorrow. Don't get mad or anything - they don't understand that. He is just showing you he has no respect for you and now you have to earn it. When horses have no respect for their people partners, they kind of act like they don't "like you" because they don't think you matter. In their head they are number ONE and you are second.
