moody mare

My 18 yr old mare is amazing on the trail, but as soon as we go in our arena, she gets all pissy. She pins her ears and does not want to trot or canter, which is odd, because anywhere else she moves forward at the slightest leg pressure. When she does move into a trot, she jolts into it. How can I change her attitude about working in the arena?

Do you do much lunging or ground work in the arena? If not, that's where I would start.

I do groundwork often. Lounging, join-up, etc.

Maybe try doing a short walk/trot session in the arena, then heading out on the trail? Or finding somthing fun that she would enjoy to do in the arena, mabe obstacles to go over? There are horses who genuinely hate the arena.

What have you done with her previously in the arena? She sounds like she's arena sour, and is associating it with hard work. You need to back off from the arena and take her out on the trail for fun sessions. Cool her out and dismount in the arena, walk her for a few laps, even if possible feed her for a few days in the arena. Make her associate the arena with easy going fun things. If you have to do some sessions in the arena, keep them short and sweet and don't do anything that she struggles with.
