Need help to find a BIT???

Ok so recently I got a horse and I need a bit to use on him. He does Ok with a snaffle or a curb bit but he doesn't do superb. He also kinda fights to stop with those bits...does anyone have an idea on what I should use for him.

What kind of riding do you do? What disciplines? What are your riding goals? How well is your horse trained? Also has he had his teeth done recently? Need a little more information before even thinking of suggestions.

Also - you say snaffle and curb - what kind? Mullen? Single jointed? Double jointed? Low port? Rollers? What? Thanks!

Haha sorry. I do western but im going to start him on barrels. I got the vet to check his teeth and he won't need floating for a while. He is "finished" but I think he needs a little bit more work. The bits are single jointed. He actually does better in a halter and split reins its just he needs something to get him to stop.

I would stop thinking about bits and think more about training. A lot of half halts, rollbacks, one rein stops, etc. I would stop working him at any speed above an easy trot until he is listening to you and your aids.

How are you asking for a stop? Are you using your seat as well as your reins? How long have you had him and how much training has he had?

If you do one rein stops with him PLEASE do NOT have a curb bit in his mouth!

I, too, would think about more training. But I would get him out of the single jointed bits. A lot of horses hate single jointed bits b/c it pinches the mouth and pokes the roof of the mouth. Look into the Myler bits, they're fantastic.

Yes I use my seat when tell him to stop. I just went to the barn today and put a curb in his mouth and tightened the curb strap and he stopped really well and backed up really well, but now instead of fighting me to stop he fights me to get him turn and when I apply leg pressure he turns too much which has to be something im doing.

Sounds like you'd be best working with a trainer near you for at least a few lessons.
