Hi,
I've been lurking around the forum for months, if not years, but have never posted. Always just been happy to read along and see what others say.
Today I finally purchased a new horse, I still have my gelding who I'm too big for, but have been looking for a heavy horse to break in myself for a while. I came across a gorgeous gelding who's a Belgian Warmblood cross Clydie, has a little feathering, 5yrs old and broken in, been to a few shows, has huge jumping potential, and basic education on the flats. He is said to be a bit flighty, and spooky to handle at first, as he has been turned out and is still young. Really upsetting situations to the owner meant he was put on the market after the rider was no longer around. I fell in love with his picture but he was half way across the country so I did something I hope isn't stupid and got him site unseen. He was vet checked, and his feet are being trimmed tomorrow in preparation for travel on Tuesday, to arrive at mine the next day. I got him at an amazing price, I think, for my area.
He's black, 4 white socks, 18hh, 5yrs, and one of his biggest problems seems to be spooking while being mounted. Apparently he's a big softy, had an 11yr old rode him when he was first in work, but he just might be fresh and unsure of himself coming back in.
My question is, what would be the very first thing you would do with a new horse, that you've never met before? I want to start off perfectly.
I hope no one mistakes my asking this with being not confident in handling him, I feel like I have enough experience, but am simply very excited to have secured buying him and want to see what other people think.
Thanks, Will post pics provided by the seller if any one would like
