Hello! A man at the barn I board at boards 6 Haflingers and 6 Quarter Horses, he bought them for him grand children but they only ride them once a year or so. I have fallen in love with one of the Haflingers and really wanted to work with him.
So Monday I saw him at the barn, he was giving the barn owner the board check and I talked to him and he went on and on about how his grand kids never ride them but he dosent want to get rid of them. So I popped the question if I could work with this horse. He said sure go ahead, they need some exercise. I said I wanted to work with the short gelding. He said there are two geldings, one is Smith and one is Wessen but I could not tell you the difference but they are both broke so which ever one you want to ride, go head. So I decided to name him Shorty.
I went out on Wednesday to mess with him and work on some ground work with him first. I pulled him out of the pasture, he was super easy to catch and walked in just fine. Tied him up and he just stood there, didnt paw, didnt pace, did pull back. I brushed him, lifted up his forelock and of course, his entire head was covered him rain rot. I said I will just deal with it in a bit.
I hooked him up to a lunge line and did some basic this walking next to me, staying out of my personal space, whoa, backing up. So I decided to move on to some lunging. I cued him to go and he took off at a trot, made one circle around me, saw his friend and pulled me all the way over the window. After about 30 min I got him listening and not pulling me toward his friend. I thought that was progress for the day.
I took him outside to the wash rack, he walked right in, wasnt afraid of the hose so I rinsed him off then took a rag and using some water washed his face some.
Then I took him back inside, his forelock is so heavy and goes well past his eyes, I split it in two and braided it out the side of his ears. I sprayed some Vetycien on the rain rot. I worried about putting anything else of it in case it got into his eyes. I put a fly mask on him to keep the bugs off. Fly sprayed him and sent him out side. He was quite confused since he only ever comes inside to eat, and I didnt feed him.
I am going back out tonight to ride my horse and to work with Shorty some more!
