    Opinions Please!

I'm going to bring this up to my trainer, but I thought I'd ask you guys for some input too.

When my mare and I start our show season, we'd should be and would like to be riding in a slow twist dee. Right now I'm riding her in a kimberwicke (which the judges usually see as unconventional and is why I'm getting rid of it). During the transition downward (when schooling), I'm considering using a martingale. Do you think this would help, or would it become a crutch? Standing or running?

    Thanks for any input!

Martingales will not give you any control whatsoever. They are designed to counter horses tossing their heads up above wither height; standing martingales are used in the hunter ring, and running martingales in the jumper ring.

I hate riding with kimberwickes in general on any horse. If your horse doesn't have a head tossing problem in general the martingale is going to be ineffective. Its not a questions of what tools and gadgets will help you, but working on your horses responsiveness of aids might help. Im guessing he's a little strong willed anyways since he's already in a kimberwicke though, so a running martingale might help ease the downward transition. Or it could teach him to invert to avoid the bit all together, just fyi they're not allowed in the hunter ring though. Depending on where you had your reins set, you might want to try another bit depending on the problems he has though. You can get a harsher bit in a dee ring. So it still looks hunter approved.
