| I can roll with that name MM! I like this club.
(By the way I think Riosdad has great people skills - he gets on with people like a house on fire, you know, screaming, sirens, chaos, panic LOL!!) |

I value my own company and my best rides are just me and my horse. People talk too much and don't listen to the forest. All rides with others are compromises. Alone Rio and I can cruise along as we please and I incorporate lots of training exercises in our ride. Today it was long lopes with lots of work on the leads. |

Horses: 0 | I haven't read it all, don't have time right now.
For me it depends on the horse, how old they are, how much training they've had, etc. For a horse that has been properly prepared, it still depends, some horses need to be told "it's this or else" and others just need to trust that you know what you are doing.
For our current horses, they are both very similar, and they are the ones that need to trust me. The one we've had the longest (he's the family horse, or extra), Magic, one day I was walking him and had to cross some water, their was a thin strip of dirt that should have been to thin for him to walk across, but perfect for me to keep my feet dry to I walked across it, instead of walking beside me he copied and walked it to. I noticed after that, he always does that! I've so far never had him refuse anything, or fight w/ me, if I ask him, he trusts that I know what I'm doing. He definately loves me the most, but he's pretty good w/ everyone, he likes people and assumes they know what they are doing (I hope no one ever proves him wrong).
My mare is newer, and we're still getting use to each other, she tests me from time to time, but over all we're working really well together, she's still green, but coming along nicely! She's so much like Magic it's crazy. And so far no 'fighting' from her either. Today she got to go through the creek for the first time since the rain stopped and the creeks finally down, it's still pretty muddy and slick, she had to go down a deep cattle rut, down a steep bank, and into the water, she hessitated for a moment, but only a second to deside where she prefered to go down, and then no problem. She doesn't like mud, but so far has gone through it everytime she's been asked.
I had a mare once that would do 'anything' I asked because she trusted me, but wouldn't have been so easy for anyone else. Now I could have forced them to do what I wanted (only before we'd bonded, because no need after), but I imagine our relationship would have/would be alot different then what it is/was. On the other hand I've had some that you didn't ask to cross, you demanded (or you'd never get across).
So like I said it depends on the horse, and knowing the horse is the important thing. I honestly don't know how I would handle it on a horse I don't know, if it's my horse I'd take alittle more time to get to know it before attempting anything like that, if it's a friends or a rental (I'm going to assume I'd be riding w/ a group), I'd probably see what the other riders want to do, and push him through if that's what was desided.
Alot of time if possible letting another horse go through first helps. |
