I always assume that the trip home will take less time than the trip out. Even if I travel a loop, they seem to know when we are past the middle. Just so they don't break out of the gait that I ask for, I don't worry about it. I try really hard to get my horse to walk back home on a loose rein. I would have to ask for her to slow down 20 times than to keep steady pressure and give her something to jig against.

If so, I don't think you could (or should ) do much about it. I think it is normal for all horses to walk faster going the direction they want to go. There are days my mare won't even walk coming home. I have a rule that she can go as fast as she wants as long as it is at a walk. So even if she speed walks home, that's still a walk and I consider it a success.

It may also get better with more trail miles. If I keep my mare well ridden, she walks coming home. If I let her sit for a week or more, I know I will have issues with her not wanting to walk.
This is totally me, if my horse walks, I don't care how fast. Break into a jig or trot, um nooooooooooooo!
