question on 18 month colt

I've broken out several 3 year olds that were born on my place so I knew everythink that was done to them during training. But today I bought a big 18 month old quater horse mare off of a guy the deal is it took 2 hours just to get her on the trailer sense I don't know what the horse has been through i'm not sure how to aproach it when I got her home an in the pasture I was trying to take the lead line off she was raring up to the point she was falling to the ground I guess my question is how do I calm her down with out hurting her you can walk up to her any where an pet her but you get around her head watch out thanks for any help.

Green Broke
I would get her into a smaller paddock or stall by herself and just treat her like a foal - get her used to everything all over again. A violent reaction is usually indication someone's been rough with her, so get her somewhere where she can't simply run away and you can work on touching her head and getting her used to the haltering and handling process.
