I was just curious, do people ever free lunge their horses in side reins, pessoa, etc? I have only ever free lunged a horse a while back when I was helping to train him with his canter leads, but we never used anything like side reins, it was just good ole free lunging in a halter. And now that Im getting more serious and getting really close to looking for a horse of my own, Im just wondering if anyone ever free lunges with just side reins? Ive only seen it with a lunge line.
Would it be dangerous? Such as, if the horse freaked out, you wouldnt have a lunge line to be able to ease the situation...no control, right?
I think it might be dangerous. I am not a user of any sort of side rein or martingale currently. I have used German Martingale while riding, and when I had lungeline lessons (no reins or stirrups) the horse had side reins. But nowdays I don't use them. Not saying they're bad, just that I prefer not to use.
As for free lunging, I would look at it as;
Time for getting ya-yas out.
A chance to watch and evaluate your horse's movement
Some opportunities to practice moveing your horse around using herd dynamic pressure (i.e. natural horsemanship work)
That would be my reason to free lunge. it's fun and you really can work on your connection with the horse, at liberty.
I think if you want to lunge with side reins on probably best doing it on a line... unless your horse was better without a line, which some horses are but then you would know they would be good and have nothing to worry about... hopefully
I agree, that it would be safer and best to lunge your horse on a line with side reins if you wanted to use them as I could see there being a few saftey risks when lunging a horse without a line and side reins.
I actually happen to disagree, depending on where you are free lunging. I round pen my mare all the time in side reins, and I think if you are in a smaller controlled environment, which you should be when free lunging, there is no problem using them. As for Pessoa I have never used that and know nothing about it, sorry.
