saddle breaking an older mare

Hello,
We recently retired our broodmare. The mare is 14 and raced for a few years before going into the breeding shed. She has had a number of lovely foals that did not make it as race horses and went on to becoming good trail horses. Her offspring are not easily phased on the trail. I am toying with the idea of breaking her to saddle. I know that with her age and time on the track (she was pin fired) she would not be a jumper or show horse of any type. I do think it would add to her value and life if she were trained to saddle and was a trail horse. The mare does not have any soundness issues. She was retired from the track due to her not being as successful and her bloodlines. I honestly see her more of a horse for the weekend warrior trail rider. Someone who wants a nice mare to go on the occasional walk/trot trail ride.

My question is are there other challenges when saddle breaking an older horse? Is this something worth pursuing? With the time she spent as a trotter I don't know that the canter would be a priority. I just think it can't hurt a horse to have saddle training in its history, but I wanted other opinions.

She's a trotter....she will remember her training. I don't see a big problem, really.
The very first Arab I rode, and who got me a severe case of arabitis, was started under saddle at age 13, was broodmare only before. Never any problem.
So, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
