So proud of him! Gem got over his fear!

So it's really hot here today. 92 but feels like 98. So I rushed over to the horses to save them from the heat and baking in the sun. Thankfully they were both inside, but Gem had his fly sheet on and was sweating, so I took it off of him and we marched down to the wash rack.
Just some history, Gem is terrified of the wash stall and water. He will put the breaks on and move in all directions, but the direction of the wash stall.

I was determined to cool him off, as I knew he would like it. SO I tried to get him on it, but he was having no part. So I stopped as far he would go for like a few seconds and then immediately I made him walk towards grass and then away and onto the wash stall, and he went on! I saw a few blades of grass so I picked it up and gave it to him. I was already so proud of him, but now came the water part. At first I was a little unsure of how he was going to react, but I just went up to him as I would Vega. I did a nice slow rhythmic motion on his leg and he tensed up a bit but I guess the feel of the cold water on him made him realize it wasn't so bad afterall.
I was able to do both front legs, his chest and between his back legs. I couldn't believe he let me do that! I am just so proud of him!

Just thought i'd share the good news

    Thanks :)

I think it was just too hot out for him to put him a fight and that the water just felt so good.

Vega loved it, she even drank from the hose hehe

I know! It was just so awesome. Today's going to be another hot one, so I'm going to hose him off again. Maybe he'll know that it feels good and just walk right on...

Great to hear I hope he's over it now, but if he isn't, keep working with him. You'll both enjoy it later.

Well he got over his fear of the wash stall. Took him to it today and he walked right on. YAY

But as soon as I turned on the hose, he backed up very quickly. I grabbed the rope lead and of course got a lovely 2 inch long rope burn on my right hand

I was still able to calm him down and hose him off. But I know why he freaked out today. There was a nozzle head on the hose yesterday that wasn't on today, so I think the sound of the water rushing out caused him to freak out.

Either way, i'm still proud of him for getting over his inital fear of the wash stall.

Makes me feel so good :)
