So Proud of Thumper!

So I rode Thumper yesterday, and after about fifteen minutes my dad and I decided to try something new because he was ignoring my aids. So my dad found a copy of the Training Level 1 dressage test, and I gave Thumper a long rein and we walked the whole thing using only leg aids. By the end he was supple and stretching downwards and really, really relaxed. After that we took his tack off and rode him bareback, and he actually began to use his neck correctly. He is a lesson horse and has developed all of this muscle on the UNDERSIDE of his neck from bracing against riders (including me) and this is the first time I have seen him begin to round his neck and look completely relaxed, and the first time I have seen him actually flexing at the poll. Of course it's not perfect, but it's a start! He listened to me, and when we trotted bareback on a loose rein, I leaned back and said "whoa" and he slowed down immediatly. I was so proud of him- he seemed to have a completely different attitude towards riding and listening to the aids than he did before!

Him usually...

(No, I don't usually have that tight of a rein on him- I was nervous and it was my first time riding him. I realize that I should never have done that)

And him yesterday...

I realize that to some people this may not seem all that big of a deal, but to me it is HUGE! I am just so proud of him!!!

Congrats. I see it as a very big deal! Its an amazing feeling to have a horse go from fighting and seeming unhappy with the idea of carrying a rider to have a horse become completely relaxed and intune to your every movement. Its the difference between expecting the horse to ride for you to seeing what you can do to help the horse through your riding. The horse becomes much more willing when you take their physical well being into consideration. The funny thing is, he was probably thinking the same thing about you that you are of him!
