Starting a Miniature under saddle?

I've been questioning this for some while now.

I know how to start horses, etc. but with a mini, I have no idea what to do with a person.

Its not like I could jump on a little mini and say 'giddy up' or I would put a little kid on a green mini, if you know what I mean.

So for all of you Mini owners, who started their own mini could you tell me what you did for the horse weight wise? Did you have a kid jump on when the horse was ready or did you do something else?

Minis are not meant to be ridden, drive yes, ride no.

I would guess you could use a sack of flour or sugar on the saddle (strap it down and let it flop, like a kid would). Most Mini's are driven, but a lot are trained to ride.

I am in the same mind set as the poster above. Unless you are dealing with an oversized mini (more like a pony). In which case, a small child would be the only possible passenger. In which case, its a head scratcher. You can't safely throw a child onto an unbroken pony. My guess would involve ground driving and putting a sand bag on the saddle to mimic weight.

I would only feel comfortable training mini to ride if it were the stature of rbarlos shetlands. The minis o see now a days just don't appear to be a smart choice to train to ride. Just a personal preference.

I know that a Mini isn't exactly bred to be ridden, but if it is ridden it is ridden by a small child.

I have 2 friends who own miniatures and both are finished when it comes to riding and they let their 3-4 year old nieces ride them around. We all pondered at the thought about starting one.

They can be ridden by small children, without any problems. I suggest getting the horse used to wearing the saddle first, then for the bridle, just walk next to them, and neck rein/draw rein, or however you want them to be trained. Next, push down a little in the stirrups on both sides, then add the weight of a small child on the saddle and walk them around. If you do this enough, by the time you put a child on them, they will be pretty much used to it. Also, practice touching their sides where the feet of the child would touch. I trained by mini donkey to ride, and finished my mini mare to ride and trained her to drive. I am now giving pony rides on her and she is just a dream. Good luck, and let us know your progress

Im small (101 lbs) I've had peolpe ask me to break minis for them

I go bareback ( my weight is pushing it, no way I add weight of a saddle) I line drive them first , once they steer I lean on them, once theyre ok with that I get on... the fiesty one will buck and spin a little but I stay on ,they calm down once they figure out I wont come off

Throw the kids on there, their bones are still flexible and heal fast. Can't be any worse than putting them on a bicycle. Ever watched Mutton bustin ?
