Starting an older horse help please

Im going to start working with two horses whose ages are 5 and 7. Basically they have been pasture pets for a long time. The five year old chestnut was described as a pleaser and very tame. The seven year old grey was described as more spirited and a handful. Both have had people in the saddle before but not in atleast a year. I would like to know what kind of issues you think I will encounter and how you would start them. Thanks

Personally I prefer to start older horses. 4-5 year olds are over most of the baby "that tree's going to eat me" stuff. Problems...not really anything crazy, it all depends on how set in their ways they are. If they're broodmares you might find them more sensitive in the rear that a typical unbroke 2 year old or something like that.

Basically just make sure your ground work is solid before you hop up. As palogirl said I prefer to start em about 5 they tend to think more then just react!
