Suggestion on Barrel Racing Bits

I currently ride my barrel horse in a tender touch with a dogbone mouthpiece, but he is running through it. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about gag bits or other bits that would work well. He keeps running out of the second barrel.

This is what im running him in now: http://www.kyhorse.com/store/tack/reinsman/754.jpg

I don't know much about bits, or barrel racing, so feel free to disregard my answer But, it looks like the mouthpeice of the bit you are using is fairly strong, and if it is not working, I personally would go back to basics for awhile. Meaning, work through the barrel pattern at a jog, and switch directions so your horse is not anticipating that second barrel. Also, lots of small circles, serpentines, transitions between gaits, etc., just to re-establish to the horse that your aids are to be followed. Good luck!

Payette is right. The twists on that mouthpiece are fairly harsh and it also has a leverage action to it. Your horse should be able to run at home in a snaffle. Take him back down to a simple snaffle and get him nice and solid off the pattern. When he is solid there, you can get to the pattern. You don't even have to do the actual pattern. Just move his hips and shoulders around the barrels. Change it up. Keep him paying attention.

A bit is not your answer

Agree with previous posters. Your horse needs training, not a new bit. Without training to correct the "running through the bit" behavior, then it will resurface in a matter of time, no matter what you put him in.

Yes, I totally agree with what's been said. I would take Spastic Dove's advice and try using a plain, smooth sanffle of even a French link.

If that monstrosity of a bit isn't controlling him, your problems have nothing to do with a bit. And if your horse is blowing the second barrel, he's probably telling you he's fed up with having his mouth mauled and sides kicked.

Do something with him OTHER then barrels, and get him soft in the mouth again and soft in the mind.
