Question Teaching Personal Space

We got a new mare about a week ago, and she hasn't been handled in about three years. We are starting from the beginning with her, which right now means teaching her to lead correctly. When I halter her she is actually pretty well mannered, until she gets nervous. When we walk around, she wants to be close to me, if I don't hold her to the side of me she will follow RIGHT behind me, like nose to my back. She is a big girl, Percheron x San Peppy QH. Does this mean she accepts me as the alpha? I'm just wondering what has been successful for ya'll in teaching personal space. Thanks!
