Not sure if it goes in this topic, but does anyone know any good tricks to teach a horse?Like hug, nod, bow.Im just looking for the basic little tricks
Also, anybody know any good videos/tutorials on teaching tricks?
I teach all my horses to bow Its fun and a great way to get them to stretch before riding or driving. Its simple to teach.... have treats and give him/her one then repeat but lower your hand each time and give comand to bow. When you get down to about his/her knees put hand with treat behind legs but enough he/she will reach for it and reward when they retrieve it. Its great to have a clicker too. I get mine to bow within a few days if not shorter and give treat after they actually bow. Tricks are just repeated movements with rewards. Do not reward till they do what you are asking. Try looking up Carol Fletcher Trick Horse Trainer based out of FL she used to live in NH and she was the one who taught me this simple trick. Good luck have fun! TRR
There was a book and video out a few years ago called "Trick-onometry" I don't remember who the trainer was, but a friend of mine, a complete novice, taught her first horse to smile, wave a little flag, and pick up her hat and give it to her.
oops, Just went to the above link and Carol Fletcher is the trainer I was thinking about. Her methods really are simple and clear so anyone can teach their horse tricks. My friend the novice had trouble leading her Mini horse, but still was able to follow the video and teach the tricks.
Here is another one. You can get this E book for $1. For a buck you can pick up the basic concept behind trick training and get started right away.
There is a Kindle for PC link there which is a free and easy download.
Here is his website. He's the guy behind all the Benji the dog movies. Joe Camp website
He's not a big name trainer in any sense of the word but, he has a natural gift for understanding animals and he doesn't have a marketing machine that beats you over the head. That's a welcomed relief!
