Teaching to trot beside me?

For showmanship, I need to teach my horse to trot on cue while I am jogging beside her holding her lead rope. Every time I try to energize her up and start running beside her she stops dead in her tracks and looks at me like I'm some sort of crazy person Any advice on teaching a horse to do that?

Carry a lunge whip with you and hold it behind you. If she needs a little coaxing, just wave it behind her, say the word trot, and start running.
