Talking Things have finally clicked (I'm so happy)

I truly can hardly believe it. After so many challenges and ups and downs my little mare and I seem to be going down the right track now. Have only owned her for 6 weeks now but within the first couple was really beginning to question why I bought her. This past week though has been amazing. I no longer have the dread of having to go work with her and she is beginning to understand what I want, which is not always go go go. For the past 3 rides before today I have just been doing walk trot transitions in the arena and she has done beautifully. She starts out a bit fast but very soon begins to settle into a nice rhythmic gait. Today had an unofficial lesson with her and it couldn't have gone any better. This now makes 4 nice rides which has not happened since the day I brought her home. No rushing at either gait, bending beautifully and listening to my leg cues wonderfully. And all this while tractors digging wholes and semi load of hay being dropped off and loads of noise and ruckus going on around us and not one blow up or getting off focus. She for the first time was really listening to me the whole ride and waiting for my next cue.

Sorry for the whole novel I'm just so excited and had to tell someone.

That's great. Good for you both. But if you've only had her 6 weeks, I'm not at all surprised you had issues, as she would have been stressed out at being in a new place, not to mention having a new person doing stuff to her. I prefer to take a few weeks at least just getting to know new horses & let them settle in, then I basically start at square 1 with training - no matter how well trained or otherwise they are - and take it gradually at their pace until we get to know eachother & communicate well together.

Yeah, you're doing pretty darn good for only 6 weeks. Glad to hear things clicked for you both so quickly.

You just have to see your distance...you don't have to like it.
