    Definitely agree with kevinshorses. Ticks, mites, and flies can all cause pain in and around the ears. There's also the possibility of foreign objects in the ear or embedded in tissue around the ear. I saw a horse once that had a two inch thorn completely embedded just behind her left ear. Once the vet removed that and the mare was allowed to heal, she was no longer ear shy.
